Where the previous chapter left an assembled question of stewardship and danger, this one arrives with wreckage and flesh. In the months after the first landfalls, one of the ships was driven ashore against a bleak island.The keel scraped and timbers splintered; a scene of collapse replaced the earlier scenes of methodical measurement. The first concrete tableau is of men hauling planks from a shattered hull.
