The Distance You Keep by Lori Yamamoto
from The Crime Of The Century Podcast · host Matt Love
[Verse 1 - The Glass] I looked at your face. The light was hitting the glass at an angle. I felt myself watching you. Not dropping. Just... watching. You were happening. [Verse 2 - The Step] Like a step you miss in the dark. But I did not miss it. I just noticed the way you looked at the floor when you laughed. You cannot fake that. [Verse 3 - The Counting] I counted the lines around your eyes. Not to count. Just to see them. Each one is a small map of somewhere you have been. I have not been there. [Verse 4 - The Running] You are always running, even when you sit still. I can hear the train from here. It is not a sad sound. It is just a sound. Like a breath. [Verse 5 - The Room] Why is it so hard to just sit in the room? I do not know. But I am sitting. You are sitting. That is already something. That is already. [Verse 6 - The Picture] If I knew what you were looking for, I would tell you. But I do not. I am not the girl who stays in the picture. I move. I move. [Verse 7 - The Film] The film is old now. The colors are bleeding at the edges. But that is not a sad thing. It just means the film has been held. Has been looked at. [Verse 8 - The Leak] The cup has a leak. It is okay. It is not a tragedy. It is just a cup. I will drink it faster. Or I will not drink it. Okay. [Verse 9 - The Distance] I think you are afraid of the distance you keep between your hands but distance is not empty. It is just... space [verse 10 - The End] Space for the light to move through I am not unhappy I am just watching you happen. That is different. Okay.
