The Divorcee (1930) — "From now on, you're the only man in the world that my door is closed to."
from The Kulturecast · host Weirding Way Media
We continue Mike White March with a film that not only won its lead an Academy Award but also features a wild opening that has to be seen to be believed: The Divorcee. Norma Shearer stars as the titular divorcee, who spends the film falling in and out of love with her husband and a bevy of would-be suitors. It straddles the line between drama, comedy, and pre-Code euphemism with ease, even if the ending is a bit disappointing. We dig into the film, Shearer's performance, and its bizarre ending. The Projection Booth's Mike White and Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard join Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, to talk Norma Shearer, pre-Code Hollywood, that ending, and so much more.
