The Dog That Saved a Combat Veteran's Life
from The Transform U! Live Show Hosted by Marcus Hart
Command Chief Rebekah Gundrum spent 20 years in the US Navy, including a combat tour in Iraq. She came home and nearly lost everything to PTSD, depression, and anxiety so severe her teenage daughter became her caregiver before she even had a driver's license. Then a rescue dog named Trigger walked into her life through Northwest Battle Buddies, a nonprofit that gives combat veterans fully trained PTSD service dogs completely free of charge. This is her story: the twenty years, the collapse, and what actually brought her back. This September is National Service Dog Month. If you or someone you love is a veteran carrying more than they're letting on, Northwest Battle Buddies has paired over 300 veterans with service dogs since 2012, entirely free. Learn more: northwestbattlebuddies.org Rebekah now advocates for veteran mental health through Trigger22 and is pushing for the Veterans Saves Act, which would have the VA fund these dogs instead of leaving it to nonprofits alone. Follow her work: trigger22.com This is The Transform U! Live Show. I'm Marcus Hart, Army combat veteran, and every week I sit down with people who lived the after, not just the highlight reel. #Veterans #PTSDAwareness #ServiceDog #MentalHealthAwareness #NationalServiceDogMonth #CombatVeteran
