The DOLORES Trolley Saves Stranded Dolphins | Cork News
from Cork News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Denis ORegan, a West Cork resident, teamed up with University College Cork and the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group to solve a critical problem: rescuing stranded dolphins and whales. These massive animals—sometimes over 300 pounds—require eight people to move safely, but Denis dreamed of a solution that just two could handle. He challenged engineers to design a portable, car-friendly rescue trolley that works on sand, rocks, and more. With help from Gemma OConnor’s sketches and free gear from Doyle Sails, they built DOLORES—the DOLphin Onshore REscue System—which successfully tested after three years. Now, when you spot a stranded marine mammal, call the IWDG hotline: trained experts will handle it safely, not DIY heroes risking injury or harm.
