In the late autumn of 2019, I spent a week in Wisteria, Ohio — a town that clings to the highway like a forgotten pocket. The public library there was a brick building with a basement that smelled of old paper and bleach. My friend Carla worked the evening shift. She told me about a door in the basement that wasn't always there — a narrow oak door with a brass knob that appeared only after nine o'clock. She thought she was imagining it.
