In the summer of 1997, Luna spent a week at her grandmother's house in Meridian, Mississippi. The house had a door that no one opened—a narrow, white-paneled door at the end of the upstairs hall, sealed with a brass lock and painted over. Her grandmother said it led to the attic. But the attic was accessed through a hatch in the ceiling. Luna found the key in a sewing box, and one humid night, she turned the lock. The door swung inward onto a room that didn't exist in the blueprints. A room with a single window that looked out on a sky she had never seen.
