The Dreyfus Affair

from History Shorts

In 1894, French Army officer Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason and sentenced to imprisonment on Devil's Island. Dreyfus was Jewish. The evidence against him was deeply flawed, while secret material was provided to the military judges without the defense being allowed to examine it. Then evidence emerged pointing toward another officer. Instead of ending the case, the revelation helped expose a growing cover-up that divided France over the military, justice, republicanism, and antisemitism. In 1898, novelist Émile Zola transformed the scandal with his explosive open letter, "J'Accuse…!", publicly accusing authorities of condemning an innocent man. The controversy consumed France for years before Dreyfus was finally exonerated in 1906. The affair also became intertwined with the development of modern political Zionism, particularly through Theodor Herzl, who witnessed European antisemitism firsthand during this era.
