In the summer of 1997, a seven-year-old girl named Maya disappeared from the town of Salt Creek, Illinois, during a street fair. She was last seen near the old jukebox in the back of the Salt Creek Tavern, a place that had been locked and boarded up for years. Her mother swore she heard a song playing from inside that night—a tinny, underwater version of 'Dream a Little Dream of Me.' Twenty years later, I went to Salt Creek to write about cold cases.
