The Dutch in the Spice Islands: Conquest of the Banda Islands

In 1609, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) arrived in the Banda Islands with a treaty in one hand and a sword in the other. What followed was one of the most brutal episodes in colonial history: the conquest of the nutmeg-producing islands of Banda Neira, Lontor, Ai, and Run. This episode focuses on the VOC's systematic campaign to monopolize the spice trade, from the early negotiations with local orang kaya (chiefs) to the massacre of 1621 led by Jan Pieterszoon Coen.
