THE EAGLE OF FREEDOM, freedom TO, & freedom FROM http://bit.ly/21kcHn5 pdf http://bit.ly/21kg4KF MADE WHILE I was out doing mid-April fieldwork, this is a rough-cut dialogue tape -- with a bit of gusty wind at the beginning of the recording -- on a new, perhaps more balanced, way of looking at the two sides or "wings of freedom." NOTE: The one example I unfortunately forgot to include is also the most obvious: The FREEDOM TO give now unlimited amounts of financial support to the political party of one's choice must be balanced by the FREEDOM FROM inherently corrupting influence of money. We could easily do this. It would be no more difficult than designing roads with clear speed limits. But we don't, I argue, simply because our thinking about such restraints is severely distorted by what I'm calling a false, misleading, idea of freedom itself. And so we suffer the consequences, in this case "the best democracy money can by," which is really the end of democracy. The current in many ways tragic-comic 2016 US election cycle is a textbook example. The key point is that this is totally unnecessary suffering. And could easily be totally different. That's my view. All we need to do is to sit down together in serious dialogue and get our mistakes clear.
