Popopo, a powerful but bored knook, seeks novelty by visiting a human city and, misunderstanding human ways, frees stuffed birds from a milliner's shop, believing he is rescuing live creatures. This act causes the milliner great distress as the birds were essential for her fashionable hats. After a failed attempt to replace them with mice terrifies the milliner, Popopo consults the knook king and learns to solve the problem creatively: he uses his magic to "enchant the types" in newspapers and magazines, subtly changing the fashion trends to make bird-adorned hats unpopular.
