The End Is the Beginning | Simchat Torah 5787
from Voice of Tsemach Hosted by Tsemach Adonai
Every story has a beginning and an ending. But with Torah, when we reach the end, we begin again. In this special Sh’mini Atzeret / Simchat Torah 5787 teaching, we come to V’Zot HaBracha, the final portion of the Torah. After forty years in the wilderness, Moses’ final words do not center on Israel’s hardships, failures, or even the destination they were about to enter. Instead, Moses brings their attention back to what mattered most: God was with them, He gave them His Torah, and He blessed His people. Deuteronomy 33 reminds us of God’s revelation from Sinai, Seir, and Paran, His holy ones surrounding Him, and the fiery Torah given from His right hand. Above all, it reminds us that He loves His people and teaches them His ways. Moses then gives his final blessings to the tribes of Israel—and some details are striking. Reuben is warned about diminishing. Judah receives only a brief mention. Shimon is not specifically named. Yet Levi and Joseph receive remarkable blessings. Why? Levi recalls those who stood with Moses during the crisis of the Golden Calf, while Joseph reminds us of the one through whom God provided life and sustenance for his family. Their stories point us toward faithfulness, obedience, provision, and purpose. But Simchat Torah does not end when we reach the final words of Deuteronomy. We roll the scroll back. We return to Bereshit—Genesis—and begin again. Creation matters again. Israel’s beginnings matter again. The lessons we thought we already knew invite us to look once more, because Torah is not simply a book to finish—it is instruction to return to, learn from, and live. And as James 1:21–25 reminds us, hearing the Word without putting it into practice is like looking into a mirror and immediately forgetting what we saw. We don’t study Torah simply to know more. We study Torah so that our lives may reflect what we have learned. This Simchat Torah, we celebrate not merely because we have reached the end. We celebrate because the end gives us an opportunity to begin again. The End Is the Beginning.
