On this episode, we discuss the thirty-third Best Picture Winner: “THE APARTMENT.”
"The Apartment" follows C. C. Baxter, an insurance clerk who, in the hope of climbing the corporate ladder, lets more-senior coworkers use his Upper West Side apartment to conduct extramarital affairs. When his manager Mr. Sheldrake begins using Baxter's apartment in exchange for promoting him, Baxter is disappointed to learn that Sheldrake's mistress is Fran Kubelik, the elevator girl at work whom Baxter is interested in himself. Soon Baxter must decide between the girl he loves and the advancement of his career. Directed by Billy Wilder, the film stars Jack Lemmon as C.C. Baxter, Shirley MacLaine as Fran Kubelik, Fred MacMurray as Jeff D. Sheldrake, Ray Walston as Joe Dobisch, and Jack Kruschen and Dr. Dreyfuss.
