The Eruption of Krakatau

On August 27, 1883, the volcanic island of Krakatoa, in modern day Indonesia's Sunda Strait, tore itself apart in a series of explosions heard thousands of miles away. For three months, the mountain had been building toward this morning, venting ash, shaking windows in Batavia, and drawing a lone Dutch surveyor who mapped its craters and warned no one to land there again.
