Empire of Liberty — Episode 18 The National Debt Grows $87,000 Every Second As of early April 2026, the gross national debt stood at $38.98 trillion and was climbing by roughly $7.58 billion a day. In the first half of fiscal 2026 alone, the federal government paid $529 billion in interest — a pace that puts annual interest above one trillion dollars for the first time in American history, and above the combined budgets of the Defense and Education Departments. The Constitution the founders wrote contains no authorization for paper currency, no provision for a central bank, and no power to manipulate the money supply. They wrote it that way because they had just watched the Continental collapse. This episode traces how that design was dismantled, and what replaced it. Six men traveled to a private island off Georgia in November 1910 under false names, telling reporters they were going duck hunting, to draft the legislation that became the Federal Reserve Act. The existence of the meeting was denied for more than twenty years, until one participant confirmed it in his 1935 memoir and another acknowledged his role in his own writing. Twenty-three years after that, Executive Order 6102 made it a federal crime punishable by ten years in prison for an American to own gold coins. Thirty-eight years after that, on a Sunday evening in August 1971, Nixon “temporarily” suspended the dollar’s convertibility into gold. The window never reopened. What holds a pure fiat dollar up? Not one thing. Five: the oil pricing arrangements, the depth of the Treasury market, the network effects of a currency involved in roughly 88 percent of global foreign exchange transactions, the Federal Reserve’s capacity to expand credit, and American military power. This episode walks all five — including a correction to a widely repeated claim that a fifty-year petrodollar treaty expired in June 2024. No such treaty exists. The arrangements were informal and evolved through practice. Then February 2022, when roughly $300 billion in Russian central bank reserves were frozen and every central bank on earth learned that holding dollars is conditional on American political approval. What followed was the longest sustained run of central bank gold buying in modern record. The question underneath all of it: did this leave Americans more free, or more governed? ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 — Introduction to the Consequential Actions Podcast 0:40 — Constitutional Provisions on Money and Legal Tender 1:38 — The Rapid Growth of the U.S. National Debt 4:29 — Episode Overview: The Exorbitant Privilege 6:42 — The Founders’ Experience with Continental Currency 9:00 — Hamilton vs. Jefferson: The National Bank Debate 10:53 — The Secret Meeting at Jekyll Island 14:16 — The Austrian School’s Critique of Central Banking 16:12 — Financing Wars Through Monetary Expansion 18:37 — Executive Order 6102 and Gold Confiscation 21:04 — The Bretton Woods System 24:26 — The Nixon Shock: Suspending Gold Convertibility 29:22 — Pillar 1: Oil Pricing Arrangements (The Petrodollar) 30:45 — Pillar 2: The U.S. Treasury Market 32:27 — Pillar 3: International Transactions and the Dollar 36:44 — The SWIFT Network and Financial Sanctions 40:45 — Pillar 4: Federal Reserve Credit Expansion Capacity 44:18 — Pillar 5: Military Power 52:59 — Conclusion and Next Episode Preview: The Monroe Doctrine Inverted 📚 Companion article: https://www.consequentialactions.com/post/the-exorbitant-privilege-the-monetary-architecture-of-empire 🎙️ Empire of Liberty — Episode 18: “The Exorbitant Privilege: The Monetary Architecture of Empire” Get full access to Consequential Actions at https://www.consequentialactions.com/subscribe
