The eye of a needle

from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins

Today I saw a needle and thread, bringing to mind the eye of a needle mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. When a rich young man/ruler asked what he could do to enter heaven, Jesus said he would have to follow the commandments, quoting 6 of the 10, signifying the impossibility of even following only 6 of them, and that he was also to sell his wealth and give it to the poor. The rich man knew this was impossible for him. As an aside, Jesus told his disciples that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man. This is in reference to a very narrow gateway into Jerusalem, called The Eye of the Needle, which required unburdening of laden camels in order to fit through. The Truth here is that none of us has a life of pure goodness, to get us into heaven in our own strength. Thankfully, the Gospel of Mark reminds us that Jesus looked at the wealthy man with love. He does the same for us. He told his disciples that though noone can get to heaven with their own goodness God can do the impossible for us (Mark 10:27). He was referring to his upcoming sacrifice, on mankind's behalf, on the cross. We can go to heaven because of Him.
