Summary
This song came out after the civil war when the Midwest was filling up with farmers turning it into the breadbasket of the world. When the railroads raised their freight and storage rates and the price of corn and wheat tumbled the railroads and the banks began to forecdlose on the newly developed farmlands. This gave birth to the Farmer Alliance and the Greenback-Labor Party. The Great West , a paper distributed at the first Populist convention said "Men of the West, the party of the common people has come ande it's a giant at birth. It's sledge hammer swings with the muscle and the toil of an army , it's songs will come out of the oppressed." Songs were sang at the convention undeer placards that reade " WE DO NOT ASK FOR SYMPATHY OR PITY. WE ASK FOR JUSTICE " This song is one of the songs from the Populist conventions.
