They are a very deep look into our psyche and are based on science.  We each have a primary, secondary, and tertiary archetype, and they can change over time.  Our Archetypes change as we mature, and often, new or secondary archetypes step forth after we become parents (or in times of stress or challenge).  We are familiar with Archetypes because stories are written around archetypes - often the Hero and the Hero's Journey. Well known stories that follow the hero's journey are Star Wars, Harry Potter and the books by Tolkien (The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Trilogy).
