In June 1937, the Soviet Union carried out one of the most destructive purges in military history. Marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky — once celebrated as the Red Army’s brightest strategist and a pioneer of modern mechanized warfare — was suddenly arrested, tortured, and accused of leading a Trotskyist “military conspiracy” against Stalin. Within weeks, seven of the Soviet Union’s most experienced commanders were seized alongside him, forced into false confessions, and condemned in a secret trial that lasted only a few hours. Their execution was not the result of espionage or treason, but of Stalin’s growing paranoia. Terrified of the army’s independence and prestige, Stalin and the NKVD fabricated evidence, staged confessions, and destroyed the leadership of the Red Army from within. More than 30,000 officers were dismissed or arrested during the Great Purge, leaving the Soviet military decapitated just as the world moved toward war. The consequences were catastrophic. During the Winter War of 1939–1940 and the German invasion in 1941, Soviet forces suffered massive losses, crippled by poor command and inexperience — the direct result of Stalin’s terror. Only after Stalin’s death did the truth begin to reemerge. In 1957, under Khrushchev, Tukhachevsky and his comrades were fully rehabilitated, their convictions declared baseless and obtained under torture.
