The father & son team that tested if groceries can spread COVID-19

from The Week in Philly from KYW Newsradio · host Audacy

Early in the pandemic there were a lot of stories and anecdotes about people wiping down all their groceries before putting them away, because no one really knew how much risk they posed for spreading COVID-19. This has led to some interesting research and not just for what it proved about the threat some groceries like fruits and vegetables found in open-air bins of area grocery stores posed for spreading the virus. Equally fascinating is who did the research! Dr. Vishal Shah is a microbiologist and Associate Dean of the College of the Sciences and Mathematics at West Chester University, and he teamed up with his son Anand Shah, a student at Charles F. Patton Middle School in Kennett Square to put together some impressive research that showed it was highly unlikely for the virus to spread from the surface of these fruits and vegetables. Dr. Shah joins KYW Newsradio In Depth to break down how this project came together and what it was like to see his son take the reins and do some science. Check out their research here: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.1c00064
