The Feathered Serpent of Tenochtitlan: Quetzalcoatl's Many Faces

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the multifaceted god Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, as he was worshipped in Tenochtitlan and across Mesoamerica. They trace his origins from Teotihuacan's Temple of the Feathered Serpent, through his role as a creator deity and culture hero in Tollan (Tula), to his controversial identification with the historical ruler Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl. The conversation unpacks the different manifestations of Quetzalcoatl — as Ehecatl, the wind god, and as the planet Venus — and how his cult was practiced at the Templo Mayor, including the circular temple of Ehecatl. They also discuss the complex mythology involving Tezcatlipoca and the legendary loss of Tollan, which set the stage for the Mexica's own imperial ideology. Finally, they examine the fate of Quetzalcoatl in the colonial period, including the myth of his return and how figures like Cortés and the Franciscan friars interpreted or manipulated these beliefs. #Quetzalcoatl #FeatheredSerpent #Tenochtitlan #Aztec #Mesoamerica #Teotihuacan #Tollan #Tula #Ehecatl #Venus #Tezcatlipoca #CeAcatlTopiltzin #TemploMayor #Cortés #FlorentineCodex #History #FexingoHistory #AztecGods Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
