In the winter of 2019, on a gravel road called Tripoli Grade that cuts through the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, a retired fire lookout named Ellis Kern kept seeing something moving through the trees beyond his property line. Not a deer. Not a bear. Something that walked on two legs but didn't move like a man.
