🕯️🌊 THE FERRY | EVERY SOUL JOURNEYS
from Folklore and Flourish Hosted by Jane I Blue Box 29
Across the world's oldest traditions, death is rarely imagined as the simple end of a journey. Instead, rivers must be crossed, mysterious vessels boarded, and unfamiliar guides trusted to carry souls beyond the boundaries of the living world. Tonight on Folklore & Flourish, we explore The Ferry, traveling through four traditions that imagine the passage between life and death in extraordinary ways. Among the Mapuche of Chile and Argentina, we encounter Trempulcahue, the four whale-women associated with carrying the dead across the waters. In the Visayan traditions of the Philippines, we discover Magwayen, a powerful figure connected to the transportation of souls into the afterlife. From Ghana, we explore the ancestral river-crossing traditions of the Kasena-Nankana, where water separates the living from those who came before them. Finally, the mysterious Ferryman of Britain takes us to the shores of northwestern Europe, where ancient accounts describe boats carrying unseen passengers toward an unknown destination. Although these traditions emerged across distant lands and different eras, they share a haunting fascination with the moment when one existence gives way to another. The crossing may require courage, guidance, ritual, or surrender, but the journey itself reminds us how deeply humanity has sought to understand what happens beyond our final breath. As we enter the third week of October's Witches & the Underworld, our theme of Crossing and lesson, Every Soul Journeys, invite us to reflect on the things we carry, the things we leave behind, and the thresholds that change us forever. Whether these waters represent death, transformation, or the mysteries of the unseen, every crossing begins with a departure, and no traveler can remain forever upon the shore. 🌑⛵ #FolkloreAndFlourish #TheFerry #EverySoulJourneys #WitchesAndTheUnderworld #MapucheFolklore #PhilippineMythology #AfricanFolklore #BritishFolklore #UnderworldMythology #WorldFolklore #OctoberFolklore
