The Fictional Food Danger Zone

Our hosts explore how realistic food details strengthen fiction by preserving trust, raising stakes, and revealing character. Drawing on Jennifer Mitchell’s article “Writing Food Scenes: Engage Readers with Realism,” it urges writers to calculate calories and hydration for humans, animals, and magical creatures; research historically and geographically appropriate ingredients; and let climate, physics, and available fuel govern invented cuisines. They also explains food safety, especially the 40–140°F bacterial “danger zone,” spoilage, and heat-stable toxins. These constraints can become plot devices, from provisioning sieges and feeding dragons to poisoning enemies—or signalling that a human character is unsettlingly immune to biological needs.
