Astronomers have created the first 3D thermal map of the interstellar space around our solar system, revealing a far more dynamic environment than expected. Instead of existing only as hot or cold gas, much of the material lies in a turbulent transitional state, constantly cycling between phases. Surprisingly, while the space between stars is chaotic, the interstellar clouds themselves remain remarkably calm.
