The novella by Sheridan Le Fan was called Carmilla (1872) and the work builds upon many Gothic elements that were to become central to Poe’s works.Both Carmilla and Poe's works, such as "The Fall of the House of Usher," emphasize decaying and eerie settings that evoke dread.
