The Five Senses Check In: Transform Your Relationship with Food

from "Mindful Eating: Daily Guides to Conscious Nutrition" · host Inception Point AI

Hey there, I'm Julia Cartwright, and I'm so glad you're here with me today. You know, it's early Wednesday morning, and I'm guessing some of you might be standing in front of your refrigerator right now, or maybe you're planning out meals for the week ahead. Maybe you're feeling that familiar tug between what you think you should eat and what your body actually needs. That disconnect? That's exactly what we're here to explore together today. Let's start by finding a comfortable seat, somewhere you can just be for the next few minutes. Your kitchen table, a cozy chair, wherever feels right. Go ahead and settle in. Take a moment to notice your feet on the ground, your back against the chair. Just notice it. No judgment. Now, let's take three intentional breaths together. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four, hold for a moment, then exhale through your mouth like you're fogging up a mirror. One more time. Feel that? That's your nervous system saying hello to calm. Here's our practice for today. I want you to think about your next meal or snack, whenever that might be. Before you eat it, we're going to do something I call the five sense check in. When that food arrives in front of you, pause. Just pause. Look at it like you're seeing color and texture for the first time. What do you notice? Is it steaming? Glistening? Vibrant? Then, bring it closer. What does it smell like? Not the memory of it, but the actual scent right now. Earthy? Bright? Sweet? Take your time here. Now listen. I know that sounds funny, but sometimes food makes subtle sounds. A crunch, a crackle, the gentle clink of a spoon. Let yourself hear it. Then touch. Feel the temperature, the texture against your fingers or your lips. Is it warm? Smooth? Bumpy? Finally, taste that first bite slowly. Don't rush. Let it sit on your tongue for a breath before you chew. Notice how it changes. This whole practice takes maybe thirty seconds, but it transforms everything. You're not just eating anymore. You're having a conversation with your food. Here's what I want you to do today. Pick one meal, just one, and walk through those five senses with me. Notice how different eating becomes when you're actually present for it. That's conscious nutrition. That's nourishment for your whole self. Thank you so much for joining me on Conscious Nutrition today. If this resonated with you, please subscribe so you don't miss our next practice.
