There are also many misconceptions around forgiveness that we need to correct. Forgiveness doesn’t require us to endure abuse or neglect. It doesn’t require us to give folk repeated opportunities to betray us. Forgiveness doesn’t require us to maintain toxic or dysfunctional friendships or relationships. Forgiveness makes reconciliation possible but it doesn’t necessarily lead to it. Forgiveness does allow us to see the situation for what it is. We see the ignorance and immaturity of the other people. We see their hurt and pain. We see all the ways they try to self soothe at the expense of themselves and others. Then we join Jesus is saying forgive them; they just don’t get it.Forgiving others gives us the ability to let go of our anger and resentment. Forgiveness allows us to leave our pain behind instead of carrying with us everywhere we go. Forgiving others particularly when they don’t deserve it, sets us free. The grace we give is the grace we experience. Are we ready to be free? Are we ready to forgive? I’m Horace McMillon.
