The Fruit of the Spirit, Part 6 - The Fruit of the Spirit
from Emmanuel Baptist Church of Jacksonville - Sermons · host Chad Hayes
What is your immediate reaction when someone wrongs you, disagrees with you, or simply rubs you the wrong way? Is your first instinct to extend goodness, or is it to push back with meanness? In a world that often operates on a system of "get even," the Apostle Paul challenges believers to live by a higher standard. In this message, we dive into Galatians 5:22-26, exploring Goodness not just as a random act of kindness, but as a supernatural fruit of the Holy Spirit. True biblical goodness isn't reserved only for the people who earn it; it is a lifestyle we are called to extend to everyone—especially our brothers and sisters in Christ (Acts 6:10), but most powerfully to the people we feel deserve it the least. Key Points: Unconditional Goodness: When can we finally stop being good to someone who is mean to us? Jesus gives us a radical answer in Matthew 5:44—never. The Antidote to Meanness: The opposite of goodness is meanness. When we remember that God demonstrated His ultimate love and goodness toward us while we were still His enemies (Romans 5:8-11), we lose all justification for being mean to others. Overcoming Our Differences: We often let petty differences—personality clashes, personal preferences, lifestyle choices, or clothing—build walls that keep us from showing God's love. A Daily Walk: True goodness isn't something we can manufacture on our own. We stay in a state of goodness only by daily walking with Christ. Join us as we examine our hearts, challenge our instincts, and learn how to cultivate a spirit that chooses goodness over meanness every single day. Scripture References for Study: Galatians 5:22-26 (KJV) – The Fruit of the Spirit vs. the works of the flesh. Acts 6:10 – Doing good to all men, especially the household of faith. Matthew 5:44 – Loving your enemies and blessing those who curse you. Romans 5:8-11 – God’s commendation of love toward us while we were yet sinners. When was the last time you were genuinely good to someone who wasn't good to you?
