His honors include the Van C. Mow Medal from the ASME Bioengineering Division, the University of Pittsburgh Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award, the Richard Skalak Distinguished Lectureship from Columbia University, and the SKT Lectureship from the City College of New York. In 2006, he was recognized as one of Scientific American's 50 Leaders in Science and Technology.
