Scientists are learning to slow aging cell by cell. Gene-editing tools may fix deadly DNA mistakes before babies are born. Nanobots, smaller than dust, could swim through blood and patch torn organs. Some thinkers believe we might copy our minds into computers, living as software travelers who can sprint among the stars at light speed. Cryonics—freezing the sick until cures arrive—may give loved ones a second chance. Dr. Kaku says none of these tricks is ready now, yet every year brings steady progress.All these plans need vast power and fresh materials. Here the author introduces the Kardashev Scale, a ladder for cosmic energy use. A Type I civilization controls all power on its planet—wind, waves, quakes, and sunshine. Type II captures the full light of its star, perhaps by surrounding it with a swarm of solar panels. Type III harvests an entire galaxy. Humans are only Type 0.7, but the climb begins with small steps: brighter solar farms, orbital mirrors, and mining metal-rich asteroids for iron, nickel, and platinum. A space elevator, a cable rising 36,000 kilometers, could drop launch costs and open a highway to orbit.
