Episode Description
The Gap Between What Companies Promise and What They Do | Episode 480
A “we care about mental health” slogan is easy to print. Living it as a workplace policy is the hard part. I’m Justin Alan Hayes, and I’m getting real about how expectations, judgment, and chaotic work culture can pile up into stress and anxiety that follows you home. If you’ve ever felt like you’re failing when the system is actually broken, you’re not alone.
I walk through what it looks like when onboarding falls apart: no clear direction, no real training, missing tools, and deadlines that don’t match reality. I also share a story that still sticks with me, a benefits policy that promised therapy support, then drew a line that effectively told me my existing mental health care didn’t “count.” We talk HR policies, employee benefits, therapy coverage, and the quiet stigma that keeps people from asking for help in the first place.
Then I zoom out to the day-to-day: the constant “fire drills,” the last-minute requests, the skipped lunches, and the kind of management that makes work unpredictable. I close with what’s helped me most, taking therapy seriously, considering medication when needed, and treating self-care as a responsibility, not a luxury.
If this hits close to home, subscribe, share the episode with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find these conversations on workplace mental health and recovery.
