The Garland at Shadow Creek Church

December 1998, the night before Christmas Eve. Luna’s aunt sends her to Shadow Creek Church to retrieve a forgotten casserole dish from the parish hall potluck. The church is dark, the parking lot empty, but someone has strung a fresh garland of pine and red berries across the front doors — even though the building has been locked since sunset. Inside, the lights flicker on as she enters. A single red ribbon lies on the altar step. The organ plays a note she’s never heard before, low and sustained, vibrating through the floorboards. She follows the sound to the basement, where the old boiler room door stands open, and a wreath of dried yew hangs on the wall, and the smell of pine smoke comes from somewhere below. She calls out.
