A backroad shortcut outside Estacada, Oregon. A gate that shouldn't be there — iron, rusted shut, no fence on either side. I drove past it twice before I stopped. The third time, I got out. The gate wasn't locked. It opened onto a path that didn't match the map, and the trees on the other side were older than anything I'd ever seen. I walked until the sound of my own car disappeared.
