Part One: In 1836 Mexico had won its independence from Spain and was being ruled by a dictator named Santa Anna, who had a large army and used it mercilessly to hold on to his power. His biggest threat was an area we now call Texas, where both Americans and Mexican Tejanos who sought freedom were gathering and offering the promise of land to those who would fight to create a new republic called Texas. Men like Jim Bowie, William Travis, and Davey Crockett believed that the fight was worth their lives- and March of 1836 found them defending an old mission called The Alamo.
