This story follows two young siblings named Hans and Lisbeth, who live with a miserly uncle after the death of their parents. The children are poorly fed and often go hungry. Upon investigation, they find it is made of gingerbread, and they indulge their hunger. The following night, they return and discover an old man living inside the rock, which turns out not to be stone after all. The old man, who is actually a wizard, is kind and allows them to use his kitchen. Their uncle, searching for them, inadvertently reveals his deceit by trying to steal the gingerbread but ends up disappearing. The children learn from the wizard that their uncle had hidden their parents' wealth. With rediscovered riches and the wizard's guidance, the children live happily ever after, grateful for their fortune and the magical encounter.
