We go Hope you're having a good start to your Monday I'm in the third week of quarantine with my kids Well, not third week of quarantine third week of remote learning in the quarantine time since we started back in March So this is their third week of remote learning and doing pretty good so far and we just got told last week that they are going to finish up the school year remotely and Just keep hanging in there everyone. I hope everyone's safe.

I am still Stein or Sylvia Stein author Sovia Stein. I hope you're having a great great morning now today for the book recommendation. I have I'm going to start off with This week, I'm gonna do hopefully three or four shows this week, but I Want to start with a recommendation of a book that I've always loved Paula Hawkins the girl on the train Now, this is a New York Times bestseller. She published it in 2015 and it's one of my favorite books of hers She said has another book called the reunion and into the water and but the girl on the train is a book that I Really really loved when it first came out and I still love it I still reread it every now and then Paula Hawkins is Let's see she was born Is a Zimbabwe born British author best known for her best only psychological thriller But the novel the girl on the train which deals with beams of domestic violence alcohol and drug abuse And then the novel was adapted into a film and the film came out with Emily Blunt plate delete role of Rachel Which is one of her leads in the book and Paula Hawkins worked as a journalist for 15 years before turning her hand to fiction She lives in London and the girl on the train was her is her first thriller.
So I guess that was her first thriller I think her other book the one she published in 2013 is called the reunion and then into the girl on the train was her first Thriller according to what it says here on her on the cover of the book now. I'll read you a little bit about Let's see here Okay, let me read you the excerpt on this book in case you have not read it I'm gonna read you a little bit about it. There she sits the girl on the train what she sees gazing out the window will change everything I apologize for the background noise Every day the same Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night every day She rattles down the track flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same Couple breakfast in on their deck. She looks forward to it.
She's even started to feel like she knows them Jess This is what she says Jess and and Jason she calls on their life as she sees it is perfect Not unlike not unlike the life she recently lost until today and then she sees something shocking It's only a minute until the train moves on but it's enough now everything's changed unable to keep it to herself Rachel goes to the police But if she really is unreliable as they say so when she's deeply entangled not only in the investigation But in the lives of everyone involved has she done more harm than good? Compulsively readable the girl on the train is an emotionally immersive hitch cocky and thriller in an electric and an electrifying debut And it is it at first it gives you a sense of these three characters the main characters are Rachel Megan and Anna And when you're reading it you kind of start off with one thing But is it what it what they say it is or what it isn't you know This is where you have to solve while you're reading it and it's a page turner I couldn't stop reading it when I first read it I think I read it in less than two days Maybe a day and a half. That's how good it was and if you're looking for a good thriller And you have not read any books by Paula Hawkings Please do because this this book is amazing now. I was very pleased with the movie after I read the book I Did notice of course the settings are different.
That's all I'll say about that Cuz I want to ruin any spoilers in case anyone hasn't seen it or read the book I just don't like to give away spoilers But I will say that this this is a big motivator for me because I've been working on my own thriller as I've talked about before And my thrillers called battered mine and it deals with several themes that are very hard to talk about But the whole point of my thriller is to show something and is it the way it is or do you have to figure it out? And I have to credit people like Paula Hawkings Leanne Moriarty big little lies Ruth Ware was one of the new authors that I've been reading about you know on Jillian Flynn and all these Great authors and of course, you know, there's amazing authors that have been writing for a long time like Stephen King and You know the great Author who was the greatest Agatha Christie, you know all these great authors That wrote these great thrillers and and I have never wrote a thriller before but I've always been fascinated by them And I've always wanted to write one and I started working on my book for a long time And now I finally, you know, I have put more effort into it and now I'm trying to finish my book battered mine But and I hope that I'll bring that to you pretty soon But one of the biggest influences was the girl on the train there's so many people that you know have influenced my writing and among those his Paula Hawkings of course and Like I said, excuse me. I kind of lost my voice there But I hope that you will read her book because it's just amazing I really really enjoyed and I love the movie as well, but read the book first Please do and I'm gonna read you a little part of what it says here in the beginning She's buried. She's buried.
Sorry beneath a silver birch tree down towards the old train tracks her grave marked with a Carne not more than a little pile of stones really I didn't want to draw attention to her resting place But I couldn't leave her without remembrance. She'll sleep peacefully there. No one to disturb her No sounds but birdsong and the rumble of passing trains And then there's another it before it starts with Rachel one for sorrow two for joy three for a girl three for a girl I'm stuck on three. I just can't get any further.
My head is stick with sounds my mouth big with blood three for a girl I can hear the mad pies They're lapping Mocking me a ruckus cackling a titing bad tidings. I can see them now lack against the Sun not the birds something else Someone's coming someone is speaking to me now look now look what you made me do And that's written in italics now look now look what you made me do And then it starts with Rachel and what I love about Paula honkings is that she'll put a date and then you know It says morning and then and then she'll have a description of what Rachel's doing You know she says there is a pile of clothing on the side of the train tracks light blue cloth a shirt perhaps Jumped up with something dirty white probably rubbish part of a load dumped into the scrubby little wood up the bank It could have been left behind by the engineers who worked this part of the track They're here opting enough or it could be something else my mother's used to tell my mother used to tell me that I had an Overactive imagination Tom said that too. I can't help it I catch sight of these discarded scraps a dirty t-shirt or a lonesome shoe and all I can think of is the other shoe and the Feet that fit it into them the train jolts and scraps and screeches back into motion the little pile of clothes disappears from you And we trundle on towards London moving at a brisk Joggers pace someone in the seat behind me gives me a sigh of helpless irritation the 804 the 804 slow train from Ashbury to us Then can test the patience of the most seasoned commuter and journey is supposed to take 54 minutes But it rarely does this section of the track is ancient Discrepid beset with signaling problems and never-ending engineering works The train crawls along it just judders the past warehouses and water towers bridges and sheds past modest Victorian houses Their backs turn squarely to the track my head leaning against the carriage window I watch these houses roll past me like a tracking shot in a film. Give me a second here I see them as others do not even their owners probably don't see them from this perspective twice a day I'm offered a view into other lives just for a moment.
There's something comforting about the sight of strangers safe at home Someone's phone is ringing. I mean come crucially joyful in a beat song. They're slow to answer it jingles on and on around me I can feel my fellow commuters shift in their seats rustle their newspapers tap at their computers the train lurches and sways around the Then slowing as it approaches a red signal. I try not to look up I tried to reel the free newspaper I was handed on my way into the station But the words blur in front of my eyes nothing holds my interest in my head I can still see that little pile of clothes laying at the edge of the track abandoned So here is Rachel, you know, you see the start of this It's very descriptive the author makes sure that she writes she gives you the what she's looking at when she's going through the train And this is what I love about Paula honkings.
It's very descriptive everything she writes about Rachel and her characters It's spot on and you go into you know the scenery like I said in the movie The the setting is very different because you know when they do movies It's a little always a little different but though the whole point of the movie is there You just have to read the book and if there's a thriller that you're looking forward to reading I highly recommend Paula honkings to girl on the train. This happened it wasn't really what it said so if you were a fan of Alfred Hitchcock and his mysteries and And you know all that all that you know it keeps you going all the way through and you figure out one thing Is it the way it is or is it something else and as entertainment weekly says pulls off a thriller's toughest trick carefully Assembling everything we think we know until it reveals the one thing we didn't see coming and then the New York Times says has more fun With unreliable unreliable narration than any chiller since con girl.
