On September 11, 2012, Notre Dame football sensation Manti Te’o told various news outlets that his grandmother and his girlfriend had died on the same day. Some of that statement proved not to be true at all. His “girlfriend” was a person he’d never met and wasn’t at all dead. How did Te’o end up in this position? Was he naïve or calculating?
