The Glove of Sand Creek

In the autumn of 1998, Luna's grandmother left her a single white glove in a hatbox, with a note saying it belonged to a girl named Sylvia who vanished from Sand Creek, Ohio in 1952. Drawn by unfinished business, Luna drives to Sand Creek, a town that seems to exist in a perpetual gray twilight. She finds the old high school, now a boarded-up ruin, and learns from a local historian that Sylvia disappeared on the night of the Harvest Dance—and that her ghost has been seen ever since, wearing only one glove. Luna spends a night in the school gymnasium, where the floor still bears the scuff marks of that final dance. She hears music, feels a cold hand brush hers, and when she wakes, the glove is gone. But in its place, on the splintered floorboards, is a single white petal from a silk flower—the kind girls pinned to their dresses for the dance. She leaves Sand Creek before dawn, but the glove has found its way back into her coat pocket. She has not returned it.
