Looking Back Changes Everything By Kari Smalley Gibson, TP Community Storyteller Have you ever looked back over your life and suddenly realized, “God… You were there all along.” That’s exactly what happened as I read the testimony Catherine shared with our Tipping Point Testimony Team. She began with a sentence I couldn’t stop thinking about: “I should have been dead at least three times before I turned eighteen.” As I continued reading, I expected the extraordinary moments to stay with me most. Instead, I found myself noticing something even more beautiful. Sometimes we don’t recognize God’s faithfulness until we look back. Catherine’s story began in rural New South Wales, Australia, where she grew up in a Christian home surrounded by sheep, cattle, farmland, and the small historic village of Rockley. Her life would eventually take her far from that little Australian community and all the way to the United States. Along the way came seasons of loss, danger, heartbreak, and starting over—but also moments she would later look back on and recognize the Lord’s faithful care. Some of those moments began early. As a baby on her family’s farm, tragedy came frighteningly close. At just 19 months old, she became dangerously ill, and her father carried her two miles through rain and mud to reach the main road and get medical help. She spent six weeks in the hospital and survived. Years later, she would endure heartbreak, escape an abusive marriage, and find the courage to start over in America as a single mother. Then came another moment she would never forget. While driving a winding mountain road with her seven-year-old son, a wheel broke loose from a trailer being pulled by an oncoming vehicle and came bouncing straight toward them. There was nowhere to turn. The wheel struck the hood and was headed directly for the center of the windshield. Then, just inches from the glass, it somehow bounced over the roof. Her son looked at her and said, “Mom… that should have gone through the windshield.” Today, Catherine doesn’t claim to understand every chapter of her journey. But looking back, one truth has become unmistakable: God has been faithful. David understood the power of looking back before he ever faced Goliath. He remembered how God had rescued him from the lion and the bear, and those memories gave him courage to trust God with the giant standing in front of him (see 1 Samuel 17:37). Tipping Point family, maybe today is a good day to pause and look back. Can you remember a prayer God answered, a door He closed, or a season He faithfully carried you through? And so God only honors faith. He never honors a fear-based decision. And the purpose of fear is to get us to make a fear-based decision that will harm us and that God won't honor.
