"The good bug - bad bug what??" - Deciphering the gut microbiome

from Purina's Bitesized Pet Nutrition Podcast

In this episode, we're discussing the fast-evolving topic of the gut microbiome.  The gut microbiome, consisting of trillions of microorganisms and their genetic material, plays a key role in digestive health. In recent years, a growing body of evidence has revealed that these microorganisms also have a multitude of other effects on the body. Disruption of the gut microbiome has been linked to impaired immune function, atopic dermatitis, obesity and diabetes. Recent evidence has also shed light on how alterations to the microbiome can affect canine anxiety behaviour. This has stimulated great interest in the 'gut-brain axis' and its pivotal role in cognition, anxiety and behaviour. The Purina Institute is active in driving forward research in the field of microbiome science. Vets in practice are currently able to influence the microbiome via a number of different ways, including dietary modification and the use of probiotics and synbiotics, though it is important to check that such products are supported by scientific evidence. This will all be discussed in the podcast. As ever, I'm joined by Ellie Groves, Veterinary Technical Manager at Purina UK & Ireland, as we deep dive into pet nutrition.  Useful Links: There is loads of information on the Purina UK & Ireland website: https://www.purina.co.uk Also have a look at https://www.purina.co.uk/your-questions-matter which contains info on some of the content discussed in the podcasts The Purina Institute provides more detailed information on the advancement of the science of nutrition for veterinary professionals and scientific thought leaders The Pet Food Manufacturers Association provide some excellent fact sheets on their website The WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) has Guidelines on Selecting Pet Foods and have developed a Global Nutrition Toolkit for veterinary professionals
