How is it possible that an innocent man, much less a perfect man, could be sentenced to death by a legitimate government institution? Is this simply an example of man's hostility to God, or is there something more to it? We know that Jesus died and that His death brings us salvation, but does it matter how we think about Jesus' death, or does it only matter that He died? As Jesus draws nearer and nearer to the cross, the injustice of His trial and the animosity of the crowd make it clear that they are about to kill the wrong person. But, even in these events, the very meaning and purpose of Jesus death is graphically illustrated. The very trial and mistreatment, the fact that the crowd wants Barabbas released and Jesus put to death are vivid pictures that help us understand what Jesus death was all about! Jesus was accused with the crime of "misleading" the people - better put, he was charged with sedition and stirring up the Jewish crowds to insight a rebellion against Rome. Pilate, and Herod both put Jesus on the examination stand, but they can find absolutely no evidence to support these accusations. So, Pilate seeks to release Jesus, but the crowds demand His execution. Pilate affirms Jesus innocence two more times, but the crowds grow increasingly hostile in their demands. Ironically, they are being incited to riot and to rebellion against Rome, by the religious leaders who are accusing Jesus!
