The Greenbrier Ghost is one of the strangest true crime and paranormal cases in American history. In 1897, a young woman named Zona Heaster Shue was found dead in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, under circumstances that didn’t sit right with her family. At first, her death seemed like a tragic loss. But then Zona’s mother, Mary Jane Heaster, claimed her daughter came to her from beyond the grave with a message: she had been murdered. In this episode of Pure Malice, we dive into the eerie true story of The Greenbrier Ghost, a case where true crime and the paranormal collide in a way that still fascinates people more than a century later. We walk through Zona’s suspicious death, the strange behavior surrounding her body, the investigation that followed, the 1800s coroner’s jury process, and the mother who refused to let her daughter’s voice be buried with her. Was Mary Jane Heaster really visited by Zona’s ghost? Was her vision the key to exposing the truth? Or did a grieving mother notice what everyone else had missed and use the supernatural to force people to listen?
