The Gristmill at Three Forks

from The Lonely Plains — Fexingo Horror · host Fexingo

In the fall of 1997, Luna drove out to Three Forks, Kansas, to interview an old miller named Elias Hatch. His family had run the gristmill on the Cottonwood River for three generations, but he'd closed it in the spring, boarded up the windows, and moved into town. When she asked why, he told her about the summer of '95, when the harvest came in heavy and the mill ran day and night. He told her about the sound the stones made when they ground the wheat — a sound he'd heard a thousand times before, but that summer, it started to change. He told her about the dust that clung to everything, even after he swept. And he told her about the last night he ever turned the water wheel, when he understood that the mill had been grinding something else all along. Luna sat in his kitchen with a tape recorder running, and what she heard made her drive home in the dark without stopping. #FexingoHorror #HorrorPodcast #TheLonelyPlains #Gristmill #ThreeForksKansas #EliasHatch #CottonwoodRiver #Harvest1995 #TheGrinding #WheatDust #FlourSacks #WaterWheel #CountryHorror #SlowBurnHorror #FolkHorror #AtmosphericHorror #KansasHorror #PrairieGothic Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
