The Guide Knows the River
from The Sportsman's Light · host Patrick
The best money any traveling angler spends is on a good guide. He knows the river — where the fish hold in this flow at this temperature, which runs are wasting your time, what the water will do around the next bend. The wise client stops arguing and starts listening. The whole point of hiring the guide is that he knows what you don't.God makes the guide's offer in Psalm 32: I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you. He knows the river of your life completely — every bend you can't see, every hole worth fishing, every rapid ahead. The strange thing is how many men hire the Guide and then ignore Him — praying for direction and then following their own hunch anyway. The Guide's counsel comes to those who actually listen: in the Word, in prayer, in the counsel of godly men. Stop arguing with the One who knows the river. Fish where He says to cast.Prayer:Lord, You know the river of my life — every bend, every danger, every opportunity I can't see from where I sit.Forgive me for asking Your direction and then following my own hunches. Instruct me, teach me, counsel me — and give me the sense to actually listen. Amen.Challenge:Pick the decision you're currently facing with the most uncertainty. Before acting, do what you'd do with a paid guide: ask, listen, and follow. Spend 20 minutes seeking God's counsel in the Word and prayer — and write down what you hear.
