The Gulf Coast Dixie Mafia

Jim dives deep into the shadowy world of the Dixie Mafia—the ruthless Southern crime network that terrorized the Gulf Coast with drugs, gambling, corruption, and murder. From their strongholds in Biloxi, Mississippi, and operations reaching into Louisiana, these loosely connected criminals operated with impunity for decades. At the heart of the story is one of their most infamous schemes: the "Lonely Hearts" scam run straight from Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. Dixie Mafia kingpin Kirksey Nix Jr., serving life for murder, orchestrated the massive extortion racket from behind bars. The money flowed through a Biloxi law firm, but when funds went missing, Nix's paranoia led to a deadly betrayal. His alleged associates, including lawyer-turned-mayor Pete Halat, allegedly pointed the finger at Halat's law partner, Circuit Court Judge Vincent Sherry, and his wife, prominent Biloxi city councilwoman Margaret Sherry. On September 14, 1987, a hitman executed the couple in their own home in a cold-blooded double murder ordered from Angola. We'll unpack the Louisiana ties—the web of corruption that protected the Dixie Mafia, the investigation that finally brought down key players like Nix, Halat, and others, and the shocking betrayals that exposed it all. This is a tale of greed, deception, prison power, and how one scam shattered lives on the Gulf Coast.Chapters:04:55 Crime and Corruption09:02 Carnival Massacre20:27 Violence Expands24:45 Gillich’s Rise25:55 Lonely Hearts Scam34:11 Murder Over Missing Money36:28 The Sherry Double Murder43:16 Federal Trial Unfolds47:33 Aftermath and LegacyExposed Listener Deals!
