The Hard Drive on Ashville Road

It was the summer of 2019 when I found the drive at a yard sale on Ashville Road, just outside of Pender County. A cheap plastic enclosure with a single file: 'Not_Me.txt'. The text inside was a confession, but not in the way you'd expect. It was a list of things the writer had not done—crimes they had not committed, people they had not killed, places they had not buried. Each line was dated, stretching back five years. The last entry was two days before I found the drive. It read: 'Today I did not leave the basement. I did not turn on the light. I did not see her face.' I shouldn't have gone looking for the address on the metadata. I shouldn't have driven to that house on Ashville Road.
