The Hard-Luck Kid!

from Don't Close Your Eyes: Live Radio Theatre! · host Don't Close Your Eyes

Season 2, Episode 3: The Hard-Luck Kid! A Fairytale of Newark written and directed by Keith Suta! Manny Midman is the saddest of sad sacks: living in the basement of Our Lady of Blessed Austerity Orphanage, working four jobs, and caring for his deaf and blind terrier Nippers. Manny should be miserable, but isn't -- because he loves boxing. He's terrible at it; but he loves it. When the Mob shows up to buy the orphanage and turn it into a nightclub, it's up to Manny to save the day by entering a boxing tournament -- with the help of an unconventional coach, he learns the real secret to success in boxing is having the saddest life story! Join us as we bring you an underdog story that will shamelessly tug at your heartstrings and deliver plenty of comedic punches! Featured cast: Michael Garverick as Manny Midman; Kathy Matosich as Lily and the Narrator; Sadie Cassavaugh as Meredith and Petunia; Marya Cline as Sister Mary Benedict Pious Dorotheus; Randy Glynn as Richie and Mr. Bossington; Eben Howard as Earl and John; Christian McDaniel as The Other Other Boss, Clem the Creep, Also-Ran Al, Lenny the Loser, the Champ and Nippers; and Keith Suta as The Other Boss, The Ref and Phil Amari! Sound effects by Marya Cline and Wren Goodman! Recorded live at Bozeman, Montana's Equinox Theatre (now known as the Verge Theater) on June 18, 2012! What you hear is what the audience heard that night with no overdubs and minimal post-production to try to make it comfortable to your ears! In this second season, we began to make our move to entirely live sound effects and this episode contains entirely analog sounds!
