Every schoolchild in the English-speaking world learns William the Conqueror's name. What most of them never hear is that William spent his final years bitter about another Norman knight — a man his own contemporaries considered the more accomplished conqueror of their generation.His name was Robert Guiscard. He was born to a minor noble family in Normandy with too many sons and too little land. He arrived in Southern Italy as a bandit stealing horses in Calabria. Twenty years later he was Duke of Apulia, had defeated the Byzantine Emperor in battle, and was planning to march on Constantinople itself. When William landed at Hastings in 1066, Guiscard had already been ruling more Italian territory for seven years than William would ever hold in England.And Guiscard wasn't alone. He was one of twelve brothers. Between them, the sons of a minor Norman lord named Tancred de Hauteville built the Kingdom of Sicily — a multicultural state employing Muslim scholars, Byzantine bureaucrats, and Latin monks in the same government.
